"As the death toll from tropical storm "Sendong" (Washi) continues to approach the 1,000 mark, authorities on Wednesday estimated the damage to property caused by the storm as nearing P1 billion.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council said that as of 6 a.m. Wednesday, the number of fatalities had reached 976, with 1,603 injured and 46 still missing.

On the other hand, the NDRRMC said "Sendong" had affected 65,067 families or 348,749 people in 319 villages in 31 towns and eight cities in 13 provinces.

Some 10,039 families or 44,213 people are being served in 60 evacuation centers.

The NDRRMC also said the estimated cost of damage to infrastructure, agriculture and school buildings has so far amounted to P999,946,415.

Deaths reach 957, hundreds still missing

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) - Tropical storm "Sendong" (international name Washi) is the world's deadliest storm this year, latest data shows.

The storm, which struck Northern Mindanao, the Visayas, and Palawan over the weekend, has now killed at least 957 people, the country's disaster management chief said Tuesday morning.

National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) Director Benito Ramos also said they have lost count of the number of people who have gone missing following the flashfloods spawned by the storm."

Google Help to find Missing Person

MANILA, Philippines - People looking for friends and relatives who have gone missing because of tropical storm Sendong may find help from Internet tech giant Google. Google has set up a Person Finder tool to locate people in the disaster-affected areas in Northern Mindanao and elsewhere. The tool, which is in English and Filipino, also allows people to share information about people in the flooded communities. To search information regarding a person, one only needs to enter a name in the tool and it will provide information based on records in database. The tool was tracking 200 records of people as of Monday afternoon.

Tropical Storm Sendong (international name: Washi) ravaged Mindanao, slamming it with devastating rains and unleashing flash floods and landslides that have left a horrifying trail of destruction. As of 10AM, the death toll has reached 497 (Cagayan De Oro 215, Iligan City 195, Bukidnon 47, Negros Oriental 22, Lanao del Norte 9, Compostela Valley 5, Zamboanga del Norte 3, Surigao del#Sur 1). Most of the dead were asleep Friday night when raging floodwaters pounded their homes from rivers and cascaded from mountain slopes following 12 straight hours of heavy rains in Mindanao. The typhoon has affected a total of 5,884 families, with 202 injured and 162 still missing. 2,252 are still sheltered at 23 evacuation centers.

"TOKYO - A country used to celebrating the lives of the world's oldest people was this week marking the passing of another notable centenarian, when the planet's oldest dog died in Japan.

Pusuke, a male cross breed, breathed his last on Monday afternoon, at the ripe old age of 26 years and nine months, making him the equivalent of more than 120 in human years, reports said.

The animal suddenly refused to eat and appeared to be having difficulty breathing after many years of good health, owner Yumiko Shinohara said, according to Kyodo News.

The canine died in the early afternoon, watched by his owner."

UPDATED 10:30 a.m. - The death sentence of the Filipino scheduled for execution in China on Thursday was promulgated at around 9:08 a.m. minutes after his relatives talked to him.

A report of GMA News TV's "News To Go" said the relatives were given 10 to 20 minutes to talk to the convict, whose identity was withheld upon the request of his family, at Guilin Municipal Intermediate People’s Court, where the death sentence was read to him.

After the meeting with the relatives, the promulgation of the death sentence followed, t`e report said.

Meanwhile, in a text message, Consul General Raly Tejada told the Office of the Vice President (OVP) that the execution will push through.
